Home of the Carteret County Historical Society
Welcome to the History Museum of Carteret County!
Carteret County’s history stretches geographically from Cedar Point to Cedar Island and the Croatan Forest to the sand-swept beaches of the Atlantic Ocean. Preserving and interpreting the lives of those who have lived here is the mission of the Carteret County Historical Society, fostered largely by member volunteers.
The museum is centrally located, near Morehead City’s old Train Depot, the waterfront and just a short drive to the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean. Within the History Museum of Carteret County, locals, part-time residents, and visitors alike experience our history through our collections of documents, photographs, and objects that illustrate the lives of this rural county’s inhabitants.
Begin your adventure into Carteret County’s past here. The museum features long and short-term exhibits on nearby history, a genealogical research center, publications, programs that highlight our storied past…plus free parking and Wi-Fi!
We can also assist you in discovering the county’s other heritage attractions, museums, and historical sites. During your visit, spend some time in the Museum Store or visit nearby shops and restaurants within walking distance. The Museum Store, Research Center, and programs in local history add value to your visit.

Celebrating over 50 years of service to the greater Carteret County community, the Carteret County Historical Society’s mission focuses on presenting local history to our residents and visitors. We do this through our heritage products: stories, publications, exhibits and presentations. A growing array of artifact, photograph, and document collections ranging from the 18th century to just yesterday supports such effort.
